Australian Spider Sponge
Western Australian Spider Sponge (Stylaster / Calyptrophora Sp.)
The Western Australian Spider Sponge is a rare, deep-water beauty prized for its intricate branching structure and vibrant reds and oranges. Collected sustainably from cooler, nutrient-rich waters off Western Australia, this non-photosynthetic (NPS) sponge adds breathtaking dimension to any display—especially low-light or shaded aquascapes.
Care Requirements
- Lighting: Low to no light — strictly non-photosynthetic. Direct light can cause tissue loss.
- Flow: Moderate to strong, turbid flow that keeps detritus off the branches.
- Feeding: Requires consistent broadcast feeding of fine particulate foods (Reef Roids, phyto blends, rotifers, live phyto, marine snow, etc.). Best kept in tanks with heavy nutrient import/export.
- Placement: Shaded areas, caves, or undersides of rockwork. Avoid contact with sand or air exposure.
- Difficulty: Advanced — suited for experienced reefkeepers who can maintain stable parameters and regular feeding schedules.
A striking showpiece for NPS enthusiasts, offering unique movement and architecture unmatched by typical reef livestock.
